Earlier in the year I posted a brief about ACTA negotiations which are on track to conclude in 2009! With the Amendments to the Copyright Act 2008 due to take affect in Octboer, I whink we should be making a considered stand for the Fair Use and Education Exemptions we managed to hold on to over that protracted negotiation period. This is bigger even than the US Cope Bill Dave alerted us to earlier which threatens net neutrality. From what I read ACTA is acting outside of WIPO,and is a plurilateral not a multilateral treaty proposed - a divide and conquer by stealth number.
Ever use Skype or peer-to-peer networks? Have you Ever excercised your exemptions of Fair USE over any material anywhere on the internet? Here are some submissions if you don't know why it has potential to be a problem.

From reading information on the Ministry of Economic development's page, it appears that from the government's perspective this is a done deal, and they're now going through the process of determining how the details will be implemented.
Is anyone else concerned about this? How could we add our voice to the discussion?

From what I can tell, it is one of a great many policies that we should be concerned about, but for the same reasons outlined in Mark Harris' submission, do not see the light of day. I think, in this case we are lucky to see such a strong submission from Harris, and hopefully it will carry forward. Noted also is that the public submission due date is over, and I can't tell what the current status of the Act is today.

one mechanism is to blog it far and wide. We are wasting time in email.
Creative Commons erodes Fair Use, and the education sector itself destroyed our rights to educational use when we starting restricting access to our own educational materials!

Blogging's all well & good for spreading the word, but I was talking about a direct submission to the government which is probably what is needed at this stage.

I think Harris' submission is a good one, and all we as individuals and as an organisation (if we can get to that point) is formally express our support for Harris' concerns. I would also contact Harris and ask him what he thinks you should do, if you feel strongly about this particular injustice. The next step might be to use the Youtube NZTV1 project where you submit a 30 second question to the election candidates.

I'm on school holidays at the moment so just tuned in today to read a few emails.
I found out about ACTA from a podcast on RadioNZ but am now subscribed to the MED news feed, in the hope I will be up with the play on any future things of interest/concern.
Even though submissions had closed I still felt compelled to write in. If you wish to add your support to someone else's submission or write your own, send it to George.War...@med.govt.nz.
You will get an email back to say it is outside of the time frame but last year when I wrote submissions on the Copyright Act Amendment I know at least one still made it into the Select Committee, even though I started my project after the submissions closed.
Another option is to approach the papers. I think this is a news worthy story. It's something that could potentially impact a large number of people, which the public seems to know nothing about.
Would anyone be interested in talking to reporters from the ODT about this?
(apart from me)

I have no contacts in ODT, but I think that if Harris' submission was forwarded to one, that they should be able to see and pick it up
