Subject: Antarctic Survival Kit contents
Waihola school children have asked what is in an Antarctic survival
kit bag.  I only remembered a few of the things, so after checking it
out I can now give a comprehensive list. Check this one out and
compare it to what you might have in a survival kit bag in NZ :

(SCOTT BASE ISSUED) ANTARCTIC SURVIVAL KIT FOR 2 PEOPLE

Tent (a tunnel dome mountaineering tent)
2 sleeping bags
2 thermarests
portable stove
pot
bowls
cups
food (freeze dry meals, chocolate, muslei bars)
matches
fuel
spare gloves and polypro clothing
survival blankets (2)
simple first aid kit
shovel (for snow mostly)
snow pockets (pouches to pack with snow or rocks to anchor the tent in
the snow)
a signalling mirror

These survival kits are not light.  They require 2 people to carry
them (not the sort of thing you would plan to take tramping in NZ
huh!)
