This is not the real soc.culture.new-zealand FAQ. The Real Thing is several
hundred Kb long and is currently in dry dock undergoing a major overhaul.
This is something simple I've put together in a morning over a couple of
cups of coffee. The current version of the Real Thing is currently situated

This will be posted whenever I feel like it, or whenever there's any
on-topic traffic on soc.culture.new-zealand, whichever is the less
frequent.

The Questions Everybody Asks:

Q: What do I have to do to emigrate to New Zealand?

A: The info is at http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migration/ . If you have
a work-related skill in high demand, or are prepared to start up a business
and employ New Zealanders, or have family over here, it shouldn't be too
difficult. Don't lie about any criminal convictions when applying for
residence - you WILL get caught.

Q: Will I be accepted here?

A: Yes, if you want to be. Hint: you will be the new arrival, and
proclamations that This Is How Things Should Be Because This Is How We
Do Them At Home are not encouraged. A respected politician many years
ago suggested to new MPs to "breathe through your nose". Wise advice.
About 85% of the country's population is descended from people who have
immigrated over the last couple of centuries. You will meet the odd
xenophobic immigrant-hater. You've got them "At Home" as well - and if
you don't believe that, I've got a harbour bridge you might be
interested in buying.

The following two answers are largely the work of Philip Crookes, and
are used with permission. Any errors are likely to be the result of
my editing of them.

Q: Why would I want to shift to New Zealand anyway?

A: The food, the wine, the beer, the beach, the air, the countryside,
the bush, the society, and the amiable and comfortable New Zealand
way of life. We don't kid ourselves that we are immune to world
trends or terrorism - but we're a long way away and usually below the
horizon for most likely attackers.
Many people around the world believe that we are part of Australia,
which is bigger and louder, but we're not and we prize that difference.
Secretly many of us like and admire much of the Australian way of life,
but we will never ever admit that, particularly not in front of an
Australian. We also tend to think they're a bit pushy and sometimes
have very incompetent rugby referees.
Things in New Zealand tend to work - our telephone system is efficient
and inexpensive, the power mostly stays on (apart from rural areas...
and apart from big cities e.g. Auckland...) and there are few brownouts,
there's nothing that's legal that you can't buy in a ferociously
competitive retail sector... Some things cost more - books and CDs
imported from the United States for instance. Many things cost less.
We expect mechanics, engineers and repair people to be competent
at their jobs. Many Kiwis believe in their hearts that they can fix
anything - often with a screwdriver and a length of No. 8 fencing wire -
and they have high expectations of tradesmen.
We demand a high standard of competence and honesty from our police,
fire services, ambulance crews, sanitation workers and the like.
And we tend to get it. The legal system is basically fair, open
and honest. It's just the lawyers that are the problem. No, not really.
Tipping is not a Kiwi tradition. You don't have to add 15 - 20% to any
bill to avoid an unpleasant scene. Some people believe it makes them
look more "international" to give tips. Many Kiwis think this reveals
their foolishness. We don't expect to have to bribe people - corruption
happens but it's rare and tends to get found out.
We have some excellent newspapers - the Christchurch Press is a
good example. But our papers tend to be what United States
readers would see as 'liberal'. Like the New York Times. Our
television news is better, and more internationally minded,
than many United States network newscasts.
Schools vary - many are excellent. Be careful about the words you use
to describe schools - "public" school to some Kiwis (particularly
those with recent British history) means a fee-paying school, possibly
affiliated to a major religious group. What are called "public schools"
in the United States are State schools in New Zealand. And State
housing can mean project housing - but can also mean substantial
and well-built houses that are now in private ownership and in much
demand in some areas.
Health care is often excellent, though some very unusual specialties may
involve a visit abroad. It's generally cheaper than in the United States.
We tend to get on with each other. We have some racial tensions between
Maori New Zealanders and other New Zealanders, and there are grievances
on both sides - and in Auckland there's a long tradition of picking on
Pacific Islanders. But we don't tend to have race riots, and the
grievances are being addressed, and it's still hard to find a racial
abuse word in common use in either direction (except in the nz.politics
newsgroup...).

Q: So what's the downside?

A: We're a long way away from just about anywhere. Actually, we tend
to think that the United States and Europe are a long way away, but
it's a matter of perspective. Culturally, we draw much of our
influence from places a long way away. A fraction of what is shown
on television is made in New Zealand - much of the music you hear
on radio is recorded elsewhere. Mind you, given the abysmal state of
United States radio and the domination of Clear Communications in
most markets, I'd reckon any New Zealand town is better served
than all but the biggest United States markets.
Politics - the most right-wing party in parliament (ACT) would
probably sit well among Republican liberals in the United States.
Many Kiwis do not admire the present United States administration,
and some would prefer Jed Bartlett to the current incumbent.
We're rich compared to most of the world, but not very rich. Most of
the highways outside the five or six biggest cities are single lane
in each direction, because we don't have - and probably never will
have - the money to widen them. We drive on the left - many of us
very badly - and we have an appalling road death rate. Many drivers
in New Zealand believe that tailgating, light flashing * and honking
are the correct way to indicate to another driver that they'd like
to overtake. Perhaps because so many of the roads are single
lane in each direction, many New Zealand drivers see no reason to
observe lane discipline. Or any other discipline.
We're a small power. Even a microscopic power. If you come here
you'll live in a country that has almost zero strike capacity.
Our Navy (which has a distinguished war record) currently has three
frigates. No destroyers, no battleships, no aircraft carriers, no
submarines. We are in the process of selling the strike wing of our
Air Force. We don't expect to invade or control anyone. We have the
area of the State of Colorado, and only about four million people
rattling around in it.

* Editorial note: I believe that light flashing is in fact the
preferred method. I have owned a vehicle with a light flasher
as standard equipment, with "Pass" marked on its control.

Q: What is the pay like in New Zealand?

A: Low for a first-world nation. The cost of living is correspondingly
low as well.

Q: What is the crime rate like in New Zealand?

A: Again, low for a first-world nation. Any murder will make the front
page of the newspaper. Some years ago Clive James compiled some of
the less horrific crimes from the local "Crimewatch" (e.g. "Somebody's
nicked my Ford Cortina!") for a bit of a laugh...

Q: Will my electric / electronic appliances work in New Zealand?

A: Electricity in New Zealand is 230 volts, 50 hertz, alternating
current. If your appliances are from most of the world (except
Japan and North America) they will probably work over here,
but you will probably need plug adaptors. If your appliances
are American, check the power supply to see if it has a switchable
power supply. If not, they probably won't work over here without
expensive adaptors. Sometimes a transformer can help, but buy it
once you get here. A general rule of thumb is that unless your
appliance has sentimental value, or is cutting edge technology,
it is cheaper to sell it, save the cost of shipping it and buy
a new one over here.

Q: Will my radio / TV pick up New Zealand stations?

A: Television in New Zealand is PAL B/G transmitted in VHF
and UHF. This isn't compatible with British or American standards -
Britain uses a different type of PAL. A British TV or video will
get a picture but no sound. Most free-to-air channels are
transmitted on VHF, which Britain doesn't use. However,
Australian TVs and videos are compatible with New Zealand
broadcast standards. Radio transmissions are mainly AM from
531 kHz to somewhere around 1600 kHz in 9 kHz steps, and FM from
about 88 MHz to about 108 MHz. (according to my radio dial, anyway -
any radio techies out there?)

Q: How do I get to New Zealand?

A: See your local travel agent. New Zealand has its own national
airline. It is also possible to travel here by boat, and if you
are really adventurous (and have a support crew behind you), by
jet ski. It is NOT possible to travel here by car or train: New
Zealand is NOT joined to Australia by the Sydney Harbour Bridge!

Q: What do I do when I am visiting New Zealand?

A: Scenery and outdoor / adventure sports are the biggies. There
is culture here, but the traditional Kiwi attitude to culture is
that it is best practised between consenting adults in the
privacy of their own home.

Q: What is a Kiwi?

A: A Kiwi is a flightless bird, Apteryx australis. The bird has
become one of New Zealand's national emblems, and New Zealanders
often call themselves Kiwis. The Chinese gooseberry is often

against an Estonian-born businessman now living in Venezuela who had been

criminals, has accused Mannil, now 85, of murdering some 100 civilians, mostly
Jews, between 1941 and 1942 when he worked in the Estonian and German security
forces during the Nazi occupation of the Baltic state.

But the Estonian investigation into Mannil's wartime activities did not turn
up any evidence that he took part in the arrest, torture or killings of people
while he worked for the police, or that he decided their fate, the Tonismagi
said.

"We established that Mannil interrogated some of the arrested people,"
Tonismagi said. "But Harry Mannil could not have participated in the arrest of
those people. We did not find any documents or witnesses to prove that he
participated in the arrest of Jews or in taking decisions about their fate, to
say nothing of executing decisions about these people."

Tonismagi said it was "regrettable" that some Estonians collaborated with
Estonia's Nazi German occupiers during World War II, but added that their
guilt must be proven case by case. "Mannil is not guilty," he added.

calleth them all by names by the greatness of His might, for that He is

appointed to keep in memory. When the Lord bade Israel hallow His Sabbaths,
He said, "They shall be a sign between Me and you, that ye may know that I

     The Sabbath was embodied in the law given from Sinai; but it was not
then first made known as a day of rest. The people of Israel had a knowledge
of it before they came to Sinai. On the way thither the Sabbath was kept.
When some profaned it, the Lord reproved them, saying, "How long refuse ye
to keep My commandments and My laws?" Ex. 16:28. {DA 283.1}

     The Sabbath was not for Israel merely, but for the world. It had been
made known to man in Eden, and, like the other precepts of the Decalogue, it
is of imperishable obligation. Of that law of which the fourth commandment
forms a part, Christ declares, "Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one
tittle shall in nowise pass from the law." So long as the heavens and the
earth endure, the Sabbath will continue as a sign of the Creator's power.
And when Eden shall bloom on earth again, God's holy rest day will be
honored by all beneath the sun. "From one Sabbath to another" the
inhabitants of the glorified new earth shall go up "to worship before Me,
saith the Lord." Matt. 5:18; Isa. 66:23. {DA 283.2}

     No other institution which was committed to the Jews tended so fully to
distinguish them from surrounding nations as did the Sabbath. God designed
that its observance should designate them as His worshipers. It was to be a
token of their separation from idolatry, and their connection with the true
God. But in order to keep the Sabbath holy, men must themselves be holy.
Through faith they must become partakers of the righteousness of Christ.
When the command was given to Israel, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it
holy," the Lord said also to them, "Ye shall be holy men unto Me." Ex. 20:8;
22:31. Only thus could the Sabbath distinguish Israel as the worshipers of
God. {DA 283.3}

     As the Jews departed from God, and failed to make the righteousness of
Christ their own by faith, the Sabbath lost its significance to them. Satan
was seeking to exalt himself and to draw men away from Christ, and he worked
to pervert the Sabbath, because it is the sign of the

power of Christ. The Jewish leaders accomplished the will of Satan by
surrounding God's rest day with burdensome requirements. In the days of
Christ the Sabbath had become so perverted that its observance reflected the
character of selfish and arbitrary men rather than the character of the
loving heavenly Father. The rabbis virtually represented God as giving laws
which it was impossible for men to obey. They led the people to look upon
God as a tyrant, and to think that the observance of the Sabbath, as He
required it, made men hard-hearted and cruel. It was the work of Christ to
clear away these misconceptions. Although the rabbis followed Him with
merciless hostility, He did not even appear to conform to their
requirements, but went straight forward, keeping the Sabbath according to
the law of God. {DA 283.4}

     Upon one Sabbath day, as the Saviour and His disciples returned from
the place of worship, they passed through a field of ripening grain. Jesus
had continued His work to a late hour, and while passing through the fields,
the disciples began to gather the heads of grain, and to eat the kernels
after rubbing them in their hands. On any other day this act would have
excited no comment, for one passing through a field of grain, an orchard, or
a vineyard, was at liberty to gather what he desired to eat. See Deut.
23:24, 25. But to do this on the Sabbath was held to be an act of
desecration. Not only was the gathering of the grain a kind of reaping, but
the rubbing of it in the hands was a kind of threshing. Thus, in the opinion
of the rabbis, there was a double offense. {DA 284.1}

     The spies at once complained to Jesus, saying, "Behold, Thy disciples
do that which is not lawful to do upon the Sabbath day." {DA 284.2}

     When accused of Sabbathbreaking at Bethesda, Jesus defended Himself by
affirming His Sonship to God, and declaring that He worked in harmony with
the Father. Now that the disciples are attacked, He cites

His accusers to examples from the Old Testament, acts performed on the
Sabbath by those who were in the service of God. {DA 284.3}

     The Jewish teachers prided themselves on their knowledge of the
Scriptures, and in the Saviour's answer there was an implied rebuke for
their ignorance of the Sacred Writings. "Have ye not read so much as this,"
He said, "what David did, when himself was an hungered, and they which were
with him; how he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the
shewbread, . . . which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?"
"And He said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the
Sabbath." "Have ye not read in the law, how that on the Sabbath days the
priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto
you, That in this place is one greater than the temple." "The Son of man is

     If it was right for David to satisfy his hunger by eating of the bread
that had been set apart to a holy use, then it was right for the disciples
to supply their need by plucking the grain upon the sacred hours of the
Sabbath. Again, the priests in the temple performed greater labor on the
Sabbath than upon other days. The same labor in secular business would be
sinful; but the work of the priests was in the service of God. They were
performing those rites that pointed to the redeeming power of Christ, and
their labor was in harmony with the object of the Sabbath. But now Christ
Himself had come. The disciples, in doing the work of Christ, were engaged

Question:  Do you need French for travel in Africa ?

French is spoken in Algeria, Morocco, Mauretania, Cameroon,
Mali, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Benin, Niger, Chad, Rwanda,
Burundi, CAR, Gabon,  [Togo], both Congos, [Burkina Faso,
formerly Upper Volta], etc.

Portuguese is spoken in Angola and Mozambique, and
kiSwahili is spoken all over East Africa.

 If you're in NW Tanzania then English  is USELESS, and
if you don't speak kiSwahili you will battle to get around.
Try NOT speaking French in central Africa and see how
far you get, or try to get around central Angola without
Portuguese if you really want a challenge.

I have to strongly disagree with Lynn Guini who asserts
"French is all but useless for travel". Lynn, not everybody
travels for the same reason as you do. Some people travel
for pleasure, some for business, some for adventure,
some emigrate etc. I travel to the DRC for business, and
speaking a bit of French is incredibly useful. She also says
that "Spanish is far more useful". Apart from being similar to
Portuguese, AFAIK Spanish is spoken only in
Equatorial Guinea.

Lynn, you sound like a person who likes to "tick off" countries
countries like a bird-watcher "twitches" new species. Nothing
at all wrong with that, but you must realise that not all
travellers are doing the same. Not all travellers are tourists
who stay at hotels where the staff speak some English

There are an estimated 1800 languages spoken in Africa. Some African
languages, such as Swahili, Hausa, and Yoruba, are spoken by millions
of people. Others, such as Laal, Shabo, and Dahalo, are spoken by a
few hundred or fewer. In addition, Africa has a wide variety of sign
languages, many of whose genetic classification has yet to be worked
out. Several African languages are also whistled for special purposes.

The abundant linguistic diversity of many African countries has made
language policy an extremely important issue in the neo-colonial era.
In recent years, African countries have become increasingly aware of
the value of their linguistic inheritance. Language policies that are
being developed nowadays are mostly aimed at multilingualism. For
example, all African languages are considered official languages of
the African Union (AU). 2006 has been declared by AU as the "Year of
African Languages".

the then news administrators.  We got flamed about creating these without

votes required, simple majority (I think, something like that anyway).

The vote was rigged and the newgroup was ignored (you had to be there)

   nz.molbio

voted for and passed under the above voting scheme.  The group was
eventually removed due to lack of traffic.

   nz.politics
   nz.org.net-society

voted for and passed under revised voting schemes allowing for the growth
in the net population.

   nz.test

A technical group created after discussion when a need was identified.
